Theology (from the Greek theos - God - and logos - word or reason) is reasoned discourse concerning God. More specifically, Christian theology is the rational study and understanding of the nature of God and doctrines of the Christian faith based on the God's revelation of Himself, chiefly found in the Bible.

The Salvation Army takes its theological roots from the Wesleyan tradition. John Wesley was the founder of the Methodist Church. The founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth, was a Methodist Minister. In 1865, he and his wife, Catherine Booth, started the Christian Mission to help minister to the marginalized people in the east-end of London. The Christian Mission eventually changed its name to the Salvation Army in 1878.

The following links can shed some light on different views within Christianity. I think of it this way, "manypeople like ice cream, but some perfer chocolate flavor over vanilla to be satisfied." I know, I do:-)

I think a good way to study theology is to study it systematically. This is how seminaries usually teach it. The typical topics covered are as followed:

1. The Doctrine of the Word of God
2. The Doctrine of God
3. The Doctrine of Man
4. The Doctrine of Christ and the Holy Spirit
5. The Doctrine of the Application of Redemption
6. The Doctrine of the Church
7. The Doctrine of the Future

Within these general catagories are multiple layered subtopics that often boggles my finite mind.

We are all theologian in our own way. If you believe in something or someone greater than yourself, then welcome to the club, you are a theologian.

The foundation of theology, I think, is to spend time in God's Word 'our Compass,' learning with our mind and with our hearts what God the Holy Spirit wants to teach us.

Once we have meditated on the Word of God, then we apply its principles to our lives, so that we may be effective Christians in our mission field--which simply means wherever we are today.
How sad for a Theologian to know all the mechanics of truths, and yet not know the Truth--not know & experience Jesus Christ.

Paul, the great Theologian said in his letter to the Philippians (3:8) "What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him,"

Spending time with Jesus Christ--the epidomy of truth, ought to be our greatest pursuit. We want to spend time with him and cultivate our love relationship with him, all because He first loved us.

So I encourage you to study theology hard and deep, but never forget the Truth Himself! Jn.14:6

Mission Statement of The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church.

Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the Love of God. Its mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Doctrines of The Salvation Army

1. We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.

2. We believe that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preserver, and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship.

3. We believe that there are three persons in the Godhead - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glory.

4. We believe that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man.

5. We believe that our first parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience, they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall, all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.

6. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.

7. We believe that repentance toward God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and regeneration by the Holy Spirit are necessary to salvation.

8. We believe that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself.

9. We believe that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ.

10. We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

11. We believe in the immortality of the soul, the resurrection of the body, in the general judgement at the end of the world, in the eternal happiness of the righteous, and in the endless punishment of the wicked.
